The American Lung Association of Alabama launched an exciting new program, Asthma Indicator Screenings, at the beginning of 1999. More than 67,000 Alabama children are estimated to have asthma, but many have not been diagnosed with the chronic disease. The Asthma Indicator Screenings will be conducted primarily in school settings, but will also be offered at festivals and other special events across the state.
The goals of the Asthma Indicator Screening program are to decrease school absenteeism, decrease health care costs/emergency room visits, reduce lost work days for parents, increase awareness among school personnel, assist physicians to identify asthma patients, and save lives.
The Asthma Indicator Screenings will be implemented on a state-wide basis. For information, please call 1-800-LUNG-USA.
Open Airways For Schools is a school health education program for children ages 8-11 with asthma. Call 205-933-8821 or 1-800-LUNG-USA for more information.

Teens Against Tobacco Use (T.A.T.U.)
T.A.T.U. is a teen anti-tobacco peer mentoring program sponsored by the Smoke-free Class of 2000.
T.A.T.U. is a pyramid program involving the training of school teachers/counselors and other community volunteers who then train teens in the 9th-12th grades. These teens form teams who do anti-smoking presentations to children in the 4th-6th grades. The program addresses specific teen concerns about the health effects of tobacco use, nicotine addiction, tobacco advertising and becoming role models for young children. Each adult volunteer receives a T.A.T.U. manual that includes curriculum, handouts, a video and instructions for all activities. The manuals are provided at no cost to individuals who make the commitment to train teens in the program.
