Medicaid Coverage

Iowa Medicaid Enterprise covers:

  • Group Counseling
  • Individual Counseling

Members are allowed 12 weeks of medication per year (varenicline may be extended to 24 weeks with permission). Members are able to receive individual counseling from their physician once a year. Prior authorization is required for NRTs and Chantix, as are $1.00 copayments. Proof of enrollment in the Quitline Iowa program is required for receipt of medications.

Private Insurance Coverage

This state does not require private health insurance plans to cover cessation treatments. Cessation coverage in private health insurance plans varies by employer and/or plan. Smokers with this type of health insurance should contact their insurance plan for information on cessation benefits.

This state does not mandate cessation coverage for private insurance plans.
