Incentive Program – Incentives are used to encourage Tuberculosis (TB) patients to continue their medication treatments as prescribed. Often times these victims don’t feel sick. Some are homeless, poorly educated, or have social or mental health issues. Incentives can be as simple as a birthday cake or bus fare. If TB medications aren’t take consistently and for the duration prescribed, people can and do develop resistant strains of TB. Also, the patient stays infectious longer, thus exposing more people to the disease. The point of the incentive is to make the patient want to take the necessary medication even when they might be tempted not to. If you would like to make a monetary donation to support the TB Incentive Program please contact Vicki Tomko, RN at (314) 645-5505 or vtomko@alaem.org.
High Risk Project – As part of our efforts to eliminate Tuberculosis from our communities, each year ALAEM collaborates with health professionals in one or more projects that focus on groups in our community at risk for contracting and spreading TB.
Collaborative Case Conferences – The purpose of these meetings is to generate ideas and foster communication about the control and treatment of TB. A physician facilitates this video-conference meeting. The remote sites are located throughout Missouri. Usually 4 – 5 TB cases are presented and then discussed. The American Lung Association of Missouri staff and TB committee members participate in Collaborative Case Conferences.
TB Fortnight – This is a two–week period, near the end of March, that encompasses World TB Awareness Day, March 24, and is used to heighten awareness of TB in Missouri. Events may include such TB educational opportunities as Grand Rounds speakers and nursing seminars. Press releases and media events are arranged to bring public attention to this serious disease. To participate or donate to this event (ex. use of a facility, food or beverages, or a monetary donation) please contact Vicki Tomko, RN at (314) 645-5505 or vtomko@alaem.org.
Community Education – The ALAEM offers a variety of literature to the public on the subject of TB. Periodically, we, or our volunteers, provide statements to local news media regarding issues pertinent to TB.
Legislation – As we become aware of them, the ALAEM alerts TB Committee members to legislative issues that impact TB.
