Asthma

According to the Department of Health and Mental Hygiene, one in eight New Yorkers has been diagnosed with asthma at some point in their life. Estimates also show that 300,000 children in this City - almost one out of every four - have asthma. Asthma is the leading cause of school absenteeism. We are working to support measures that reduce the incidence of asthma, prevent the exacerbation of asthma, improve treatment of asthma patients and increase their access to appropriate health care.

This year, we are focusing on expanding our Asthma Friendly Schools Initiative to ensure that our children are learning in a healthy, trigger-free environment. Additionally, we advocate for third party reimbursement for asthma patient education and care and advocate for increased funding for the NYC Asthma Initiative, which makes the American Lung Association’s Open Airways For Schools program possible.
