Open Airways for Schools (OAS)
What is Open Airways for Schools (OAS)?
OAS empowers children, ages 8-11, to manage their asthma through an interactive teaching curriculum that brings together children with asthma, their families, schools and community volunteers. It teaches the children to detect asthma-warning signs, deal with asthma triggers, and prevent or reduce symptoms. Children learn to lead healthy, active lives.
How is OAS taught?
The course has six lessons, each about 40 minutes long, taught by trained volunteers. The interactive approach uses group discussion, stories, games and role-play to promote children’s active involvement in the learning process.
Does the volunteer instructor have to be an asthma expert?
No. The American Lung Association OAS curriculum is very thorough and easy to follow. It includes detailed instructions, handouts, posters, and directions. Volunteer instructors come from all walks of life: teachers, college students, parents, nurses, and other health care workers.
Does OAS work?
Research has found that children in OAS took more steps to manage asthma, improved their academic performance, and had fewer and less severe asthma episodes.
